The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
