As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
